AND A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL?

part 17

by Poet

When Luka woke up about midnight, he decided that Katica had been confined long enough.  Quietly, he slipped out of bed and went to set her free.  "You can come out now," he said as he opened the door.

Katica was perched on the toilet tank.  She glared at him and meowed.  *DON'T you ever do that again!*

Luka reached to pet her but jerked away when she lashed out a paw.  "You're really mad?" he asked in surprise.

"You bet I AM," she hissed.

"I can see you've kept yourself busy," Luka commented as he stared at the shredded shower curtain.  "NO more kitty treats until this is paid for."

*WHAT?!  NO treats?  You can't do that.* she meowed.

Luka ignored the cat and moved over to the sink.  He ran a hand over his stubbly cheek while he stared at his reflection.  "This is going to be harder than I thought," he muttered.

Roza awakened to find herself alone in bed.   She sat up and looked over at the bathroom door, noticing that it was open.  "Luka?  Luka, are you all right?" she called out.

Luka splashed some cold water on his face and dried it.  "I'm okay.  I just thought that Katica had spent enough time in the bathroom.  I'm coming back to bed," he told her.

"All right," she said, laying back down.

Luka climbed back in bed, pulling the blanket over him and Roza.  "I don't think Katica liked her confinement very well.  You need a new shower curtain," he told her.

"She tore it up?  Don't worry about it, Luka.  I'll buy a new one today."

"I should pay for it.  Katica doesn't usually do things like this.  I told her no more kitty treats until it's paid for."

"She's just getting used to a new home and a new family," Roza pointed out.  She gave Luka a kiss.  "Go to sleep now."

"You ,too," he replied, closing his eyes.

A moment later they felt a soft thump as Katica jumped on the bed.  She curled herself into a ball at the foot of the bed.  There she lay purring until she fell asleep.

The alarm going off awakened all three.  Luka quickly hit the snooze alarm.  He turned to Roza, who'd opened her eyes.  "Go back to sleep," he whispered.

She smiled and shook her head.  "I'll get up and get your breakfast."

He wrapped his arm around her shoulders to draw her close.  "I have nine more minutes.  Shall we continue with last night?" he asked softly.

She gave him a playful push and replied, "I'd NEVER get you out of bed if we did--you'd just keep hitting the snooze alarm."  She gave him a quick kiss.  "This'll have to last while you get ready."

"You're right, I've got to get up," Luka said, returning the kiss.  He shut off the alarm and sat up.

Katica looked over at them and meowed. *Now that you're up--FEED ME!*

"And a good morning to you too, Katica," Luka said.  He gave the cat a pet and got to his feet.

"I'll feed you in a few minutes, Kitty Cat," Roza said.  "But you CAN'T go about tearing up things."

*Blame Luka.  He should NEVER have shut me up like that!* she meowed and moved over to get petted.

"Looks like she's getting used to you," Luka commented.  He headed for the bathroom to get ready.

She nodded and finished stroking the cat.  Then she headed for the nursery to check on her son.  "Good morning, Bebe," she said as she picked up Little Luka.  "I see you slept through the night again.  Good boy>"

After quickly showering and shaving, Luka searched through the closet for a clean suit to wear.  "I'd better stop by the cleaners Thursday and get some laundry done tonight," he told himself."

After getting Little Luka into a clean diaper, Roza carried him downstairs and set him in the highchair with a bottle.  Then she began looking through the refrigerator for something to fix Luka for breakfast.  Deciding on scrambled eggs and toast, she set to work.

Luka silently entered the kitchen, a smile on his face when he spotted Roza busy at the stove.  Quietly, he crept up behind her and took her in his arms.

"Luka!  Stop doing that!" Roza scolded.  But she was laughing as she turned to kiss him.

"Will you burn breakfast again?" he murmured.

"No, I'm finished--except for the toast.  It might get a little cold," he replied.

"I don't mind," Luka said as he kissed her.  "I prefer the taste of your lips."

After a few minutes, she pulled away and said, "You'd better get your breakfast."

He reluctantly moved to the table.  "What are you planning to do today?"

"I think I'll wake up everybody and take them to church.  Viktor is going with his friend," Roza replied.  She sat a plate of scrambled eggs in front of Luka.  "And go buy a NEW shower curtain."

"I told Andrew that I'd let Kelli know what time we're meeting them on Tuesday.  Is 8:15 all right with you?"

"We should be finished talking to the minister by then," she answered.  "And if we're running late, they'll just wait for us."

"If you don't mind doing it, you could probably drive me to work Tuesday and then pick me up.  That way, we wouldn't be in separate vehicles," Luka suggested and began eating his breakfast.

"I don't mind at all," she said.  She sat watching him and sipping a glass of juice.  "When we get home from church, I'll give the children the candy I bought."

"I hope you don't give them TOO much candy," Luka said.  "I can see it now; I'll be treating kids with rabbit bites and kids throwing up from eating TOO much candy."

"I didn't buy much.  They need to know that it's not the real reason for Easter.  Don't worry, Luka.  I'll make sure you don't have to deal with sick kids at home tonight."

"Good."

When Luka was through with breakfast, he headed upstairs to finish getting ready.  After knotting his tie, he gave Roza a kiss.  "I'll try and call you this afternoon."

"All right."

Luka grabbed his jacket and headed downstairs.  He was about halfway down the stairway, not looking where he was stepping.  Suddenly, he felt his foot come down on something round.  He started to slip and as he grabbed the bannister to keep from falling, his ankle twisted slightly.  "Damn it!" he swore, loudly, in Croatian.

Roza had heard him yell and hurried down thee stairs, asking, "Luka?  Are you all right?  What happened?"

Limping more than usual, Luka continued to the bottom of the stairs.  "I'll be fine.  I twisted my ankle a little when I stepped on a toy," he replied.

She sighed and shook her head as she looked down at the ball beside his foot.  "One of Nikki's Pokemon balls.  I'll talk to him about leaving it out.  Are you sure you're all right?"

"I'm fine, Roza.  Now, stop worrying," Luka assured her.  He smiled slightly.  "If my ankle keeps hurting, I'll get someone to take a look at it.  THe ER's probably the best place for a sprained ankle."

"Be careful, Luka."

"I will," he promised.  He gave her a kiss.  "I love you, Roza."

"I love you, Luka.  I'll see you tonight," she said and watched him head out the door.  Then she went back into the kitchen to get Little Luka.  "We're going to church this morning, Bebe."

Zelika appeared at the top of the stairs.  "What's going on, Mom?  I heard Luka yelling," she said.

"He stepped on one of Nikki's Pokemon balls and nearly fell down the stairs.  Could you wake up your sister while I talk to Nikki?  And take a bath--you can use our bathroom.  We're going to church as soon as we have breakfast," Roza answered.  Little Luka in her arms, she started up the stairs.

"Sure thing, Mom," her daughter replied.

Roza knocked on the door of the older boys' room and said, "Time to wake up, Nikki."

"Is Pokemon on?" he asked.

"No, dear, it's Easter morning.  You need to get up and have breakfast.  And then we're going to church," she replied and pushed open the door.  Sitting down on Viktor's bed, she set Little Luka beside her.

"Okay," Nikola said, sitting up.

"Nikki, you CANNOT leave your Pokemon toys scattered about," Roza said firmly.  "This morning, Luka stepped on one of yours balls and nearly fell downstairs."

"Did he break it?" Nikola asked.

"I don't think so.  But he could've gotten hurt if he'd fallen down the stairs.  Now, go take a bath as soon as Jasiminka gets done.  And when we get home from church, you will pick up EVERY toy before you have any candy," she answered.  Picking up the baby, she headed for the nursery.

Luka was still limping slightly when he arrived at the ER.  As he passed the admit desk, he saw Kerry talking with Randi.  Both women broke off their conversation to stare at him.  "What happened?" Kerry asked as she moved toward him.

"I'm all right.  I just stepped on a toy and twisted my ankle a little when I grabbed the bannister to keep from falling," Luka replied, heading for the lounge.

"Well, since we're not busy--why don't I take a look at your ankle?" Kerry suggested as she followed him.

Luka hung up his jacket and grabbed lab coat and stethoscope.  Turning to face her, he said, "It's nothing really.  But if you insist."  He sat down on the couch and rested his foot on the coffee table.  "Go ahead."

"It'll just take me a minute," Kerry said.  She pulled up his pants leg and probed the already swollen ankle.  "Does this hurt?"

"A little," Luka admitted.  He leaned forward to untie his shoe.  "I'll be okay."

She stood up and said, "I'll go get you a cold pack to put on your ankle until Mark gets here.  I couldn't feel anything broken but if it keeps hurting--get an x-ray to be sure."  SHe headed for the supply cabinet.

"How did Dr. Whyte do last night?" Luka asked.

"For a newcomer to the ER--he did pretty well.  We had multiple GSWs from a gang skirmish and he kept up with treating the victims.," Kerry replied.

"Good.  He showed quite a bit of promise as a medical student."

"Somebody mention my name?" Bryan asked as he entered the lounge.  He went over to the locker assigned to him.  "Good morning, Dr. Kovac."

"Morning.  Kerry said that you did well last night," Luka said.  He carefully got to his feet.  "Busy night, huh?"

"It was.  This place is ALL yours.  I'M going home to sleep," Bryan told him.  He slammed the locker door.

Kerry entered with a cold pack and handed it to Luka.  "Keep it on your ankle.  Mark's running a little late so I'll run the board when he gets here."

Luka sat back down and did as she instructed.  He looked over at Bryan and mouthed the words 'She's the BOSS'.  He turned to Kerry and asked, "Is there anybody waiting to be seen?"

"Not right now.  So enjoy the peace and quiet."  She turned her attention  to Kellli and Abby, who'd just walked in.

"Good morning," Kelli said brightly.

"Good morning, Ms. Wright.  Can you tell Andrew that we'll meet you both at 8:15 Tuesday," Luka said.

"I'll tell him," she said and turned to stare at Luka.  "What happened?"

"Close encounter with a toy.  I think I came out the worst.  It's nothing," Luka assured her.  To prove his point, he stood up and limped out of the lounge.

"I can see that it's NOTHING," Kerry told him.  She shook her head in exasperation and picked up the discarded cold pack.

Chuny stuck her head in the door.  "Dr. Weaver, 21 just called in with a GSW to the leg.  ETA is ten minutes," she said.

"Trauma One," Kerry said.  She turned to Kelli.  "Come on, Ms. Wright."

"Need any help?" Luka asked as he saw her heading for the trauma room.

"No.  We'll handle it."

After getting the children some cereal and milk, Roza left them in the dining room while she got ready.  "When you finish--rinse out your dishes," she instructed.

"Yes, Mom," Zelika said.  She looked over at the twins.

Roza quickly bathed and pulled a dress out of the closet.  Looking at it, she quickly discarded the garment and instead reached for the mauve and spring green dress.  "Time I started wearing this again," she said softly as she slipped it on.  After checking her reflection in the mirror, she reached for the topaz cross from Luka and fastened it around her neck.  Picking up her purse, she headed downstairs.

"You look great, Mom," Zelika said as she looked at her.  "Luka will really like you in that dress."

"You really think so?" Roza asked.

"Yes.  I think you should wear it for him this week."

"Come on, everybody.  Out to the van," Roza ordered.  She picked up the baby carrier and diaper bag.  "Don't run!"

The twins hurried out ahead and each took a window seat.  "I'll ride up front," Zelika said, holding the door open for her mother.  "What church are we going to?"

"Midtown Baptist Church--Luka and I are going to be married in the chapel.  I think we'll be able to get there in time for Sunday school," she replied as she fastened the baby carrier in place.

"I wonder what church Viktor went to," Zelika commented.  She got in beside Roza and fastened her seat belt.

"I wish Luka could be with us this morning," Roza said as she started the van.

"Dr. Kovac, there's a couple of kids with stomachaches in Exam Two," Chuny said as she hurried to the supply shelves to grab basins and towels.

"I'll be there in a minute," Luka replied.  He set aside the chart he was working on and got to his feet.

"Better hurry," the nurse said as she hurried back to the exam room.  "Candy overdose."

By the time Luka got to the exam room, Chuny was holding a basin for one of the kids while the other was doubled over clutching her stomach.  Their exasperated mother was busily scolding them.  "I TOLD you not to eat ALL that CANDY!  I TOLD you that you'd GET SICK!  But you HAD to EAT it!"

"Meet Jessie and Jonathon Tighe--they each ate TWO bags of peanut butter eggs," Chuny explained.  She continued holding the basin for Jonathon.

Luka leaned over to examine Jessie when the eight-year-old moaned, "Mom...I..."  She suddenly retched, bringing up half-digested candy to splatter all over herself, Luka, and the bed.

"I'm SO sorry, Doctor," their mother said.  She turned to Jessie.  Now, SEE
what you've DONE!"

Luka had grabbed a basin and held it for the girl so the rest of the mess would end up in there.  When it appeared that she was through being sick, he said, "Mrs.  Tighe, if you'll excuse me for a few minutes?"

Jessie was crying.  "I couldn't help it, Mom."

"Now, I'll have to BUY MORE candy for you to share with your COUSINS!" Mrs.
Tighe continued scolding her children.

Chuny waved a hand at Luka.  "Go get cleaned up.  We'll manage until you return."  She grabbed a towel and started cleaning up Jessie.

Luka slipped out of the exam room to locate some scrubs and a plastic bag.  He wanted to get out of his messy clothes and take a shower.  Abby was in the supply room grabbing some suture kits.  She took one look at him and said, "You're sure a mess."

"Yeah.  Candy overdose.  Could you give Chuny a hand?  She has two in Exam Two," Luka replied.  He located a set of clean scrubs.

"Sure.  Just let me take these to the suture room."

"Thanks."  He headed for the shower.

Arriving at the church, Roza and the children were greeted by a cheerful young woman.  "Welcome to Midtown Baptist Church.  Is this your first visit here?"

"Yes.  It is," she replied.

"We'll show you where to go to classes and where the nursery is.  My name is Sharon."  She indicated her nametag.

"Thank you.  I'm Rozalija Lukovic and these are my children."

Two teenaged girls hurried over and Sharon said, "Tracy and Ann will take the children to their classes and then bring them back here to wait for you.  I'll show you the nursery and a class you can visit."

"Go with the girls and I'll see you later," Roza told the children.  She took the diaper bag from Zelika and followed Sharon.

Upstairs in the nursery, a middle aged woman peered in the baby carrier.  "Oh, he's such a cutie.  What's his name?"

"Luka Lukovic," Roza replied.

"Don't worry, we'll take very good care of him," she said.  Picking up Little Luka, she turned to Sharon.  "What class are you taking her to visit?"

"Single Women's since it's just down the hall."

"Be a good boy for the lady, Bebe.  Mama will be back soon," Roza said.  She handed over the diaper bag and followed Sharon.

Sharon stopped in front of a door and opened it to reveal a room full of women of all ages.  "Ladies, this is Rozalija Lukovic.  I'm sure you'll make her feel welcome."

Roza slowly walked in and took an empty seat.  "Hello," she said shyly.

After Luka finished showering, he hastily toweled off and got dressed in the scrubs.  Clipping his name tag to the top, he headed back to Exam Two.  "Hopefully, they'll have gotten through vomiting."

In Exam Two, the children were still looking rather miserable but the worst seemed to be over.  Chuny looked up from wiping off the bed and said, "I think you're safe now."

"It was probably best for them to get rid of the candy.  I'll order something for the nausea and the cramps.  He turned to Mrs. Tighe.  "I'd like to keep them here for awhile to see if they have any reaction to the medicine."

"All right.  I think THEY LEARNED not to EAT TOO MUCH CANDY!"

Luka quickly wrote out the prescriptions and handed them to Chuny.  "I'll check back in a little while to see how they're doing."

"Okay, Dr. Kovac."

When services were over, Roza and the children headed out, stopping to speak with Reverend Sheptner.  He immediately recognized her and shook her hand, saying, "Hello, Mrs. Lukovic.  THese must be your lovely children."

"Hello, Reverend.  You've met Little Luka, my baby.  The twins are Jasiminka
and Nikola and this is Zelika.  My oldest son is visiting a friend."

"I assume that you and Dr. Kovac are still planning to meet with me Tuesday evening."

"Yes, we are.  Luka had to work today," Roza replied.  She led the way out to the van.  "We need to pick up a few things before we head home."

"A shower curtain.  I saw yours looked pretty torn up," Zelika commented.

"Yes.  Luka shut his cat in the bathroom last night and she decided to get even."

It turned out to be a busy day in the ER.  Fortunately for Luka, the several sick kids he treated managed not to throw up on him.  Still, he was more than ready to head home by the time his shift was over.  He was in the lounge finishing up a chart when Bryan arrived.  Looks like YOU had a busy day," the younger doctor commented.

"Yeah.  We did."

Kerry arrived a minute later.  She looked at Luka and asked. "How's your ankle?"

"It's okay.  It's not hurting and I'm not limping--anymore than usual," Luka answered.

"Where's Mark?"

"We were pretty much slowed down so he and Elizabeth left about an hour ago.  I'll run the board for you and Bryan and then I'm out of here," he said, getting to his feet.

"Sounds good to me," Bryan said.

After getting the board ran, Luka grabbed his jacket and plastic bag before heading out to his car.  Arriving at the house, he noticed the van in the garage and smiled, knowing Roza would be waiting for him.

Zelika opened the door and said, "Mom's in the kitchen."

"Thanks," Luka said, heading that way.  Seeing Roza at the table, he gave her a quick kiss.  "I'm sorry that I didn't call you this afternoon but we were VERY busy."

"That's okay, Luka," she said.  Taking a good look at him.  "What happened to your clothes?"

"A kid had TOO much candy and threw up on me.  They're in the bag.  I really need to do some laundry tonight," he explained.

"Go ahead.  There's a washer and dryer in the basement and plenty of detergent."

"I didn't know that.  I'll just get everything in the wash, change clothes and I'll be ready for supper."  He kissed her again and headed for the stairs.

Jasiminka looked up from her book and ran to give him a hug.  "Dr. Luka!"

"Hello, Little One.  Did you have a fun day?" he asked, picking her up.

"Yes!  We went to church and I made you a picture in Sunday School.  Then we went to the store and out to lunch," she told him.

"Good.  Sounds like you had a fun day.  Now, did you eat a lot of candy?"  He set her down.

"Only a little.  Mama got me a stuffed bunny and a coloring book."

"You'll have more fun with those.  Now, I am going to change clothes and in a little while we'll eat," Luka said.  He picked up the plastic bag.

"What's in the bag?" Jasiminka asked curiously.

"My clothes.  A little girl ate TOO much candy and threw up all over me."

"Like I did last year after the ball game?"

"Exactly.  Now you know not to eat too much, huh?" he told her and headed up stairs.  She laughed and went back to her book.

Luka quickly changed into jeans and a loose fitting shirt.  He gathered up his dirty clothes and headed down to the basement.

Roza had supper ready by the time he came back upstairs.  She smiled and said, "Everything's on the table."

"Great.  I'm starved," Luka said.  Since they were alone in the kitchen, he gave her a quick kiss.

She laughed and said, "Go wash up," grabbing a spoon to swat at him.

"Missed me," he said as he went over to the sink.

"Next time I WON'T miss," she threatened.  "Go sit down at the table."

"Yes, ma'am," Luka said meekly.  On his way out the door, he quickly grabbed her for another kiss.

THey were both laughing when they sat down at the table.  Zelika calmly looked over and asked, "Enjoying yourselves?"

"As soon as you serve the food, we'll have the prayer," Roza said, handing Luka a platter of chicken to pass around.

"I'll say it," Zelika volunteered.  As soon as the food had been served, she bowed her head and closed her eyes.  "Lord, thank you for this meal and this day to remember Your Son's sacrifice."  She paused a moment, a smile on her face.  "And make sure Mom and Luka don't have TOO MUCH FUN until they're married.  Amen."

"Amen," the others echoed.  Luka's face was red as he looked at Roza.  "I think you need to have a talk with YOUR daughter."

"I think I do," she agreed.

"Have you heard from Marjorie yet?"  Luka asked after a moment.

"Yes.  She called this afternoon.  She'll be here tomorrow afternoon.  Said she can't wait to see her'son' again," Roza answered.

"It'll be good to see her again," Luka said.  He reached for a piece of chicken.

When supper was over and the dishes washed, Zelika headed upstairs to read a book while the rest settled in the living room.  Luka leaned back against the couch and wrapped an arm around Roza.  They were watching a movie on TV and the twins playing quietly.  "I think I can easily get used to this," he said, leaning over to kiss her cheek.

"Me too, Luka.  Me too," she replied.

After a few minutes he reluctantly removed his arm and said, "I'd better put the clothes in the dryer.  Save my place for me."  He got to his feet.

She smiled and said, "I will."  She reached over to scratch Katica who'd stretched out on the arm of the couch.

The cat purred, rolled over and meowed *I CAN get used to this.*

At 8:30 Roza looked over to the twins.  "Time for your bath and bed."

"We HAD one this morning," Nikola protested.

"After you get to bed, I'll be up to check on you," she told them.

"I'm first," Jasiminka said, jumping to her feet.  She looked over at Luka.  "You won't forget my story, Dr. Luka?"

"I won't, Little One," he promised.  He watched as her and her brother scurried up the stairs.

"She's going to want a story from you EVERY night," Roza said with a smile.

"I'm not sure I can come up with stories THAT often," Luka replied.  He leaned over to kiss her on the cheek.

Zelika appeared at the top of the stairs.  "I'm going to bed now.  Goodnight, Mom, Luka."

"Before you go to sleep, I think we need to have a little talk," Roza said, getting to her feet.

"Luka, I'm sorry I embarrassed you," Zelika said.  "You're not mad, are you?"

"I'm not mad, Zelika."

"I'm glad.  I promise that I won't say ANYTHING more."  She headed for her bedroom.

"I'll go tell Jasiminka her story," Luka decided.  He looked over at Viktor.  "Goodnight."

"Goodnight," the boy said, intent on the movie.

Upstairs, Luka quickly knocked on the bedroom door.  "May I come in, Little One?" he asked.

"Yes, Dr. Luka."  She was in bed, looking up.  "Do I get my story?"

"Yes," Luka replied.  He sat down on the edge of the bed.  "You still want to hear about the sad little Princess?"

"Yes!"

"Okay, Okay.  NOw, where was I?  Ah, yes.  There were SO MANY funny and clever people that the kingdom couldn't hold anymore.  And all day long--except for meals--they appeared before the Princess for five minutes.  There were clowns and jugglers, joke tellers and magicians, people of all ages.  Some did tricks on bicycles or handstands.  They ALL wanted to get the Princess to smile so they could claim the reward."

"Did anybody?"

"Perhaps.  This went on for well over a week with each one trying to outdo the others.  The king was getting more and more discouraged with each failure and trying desperately to come up with something to make Jasiminka happy.  One afternoon a young boy appeared before the king and said, "I know I'm not very funny or clever.  But, could I please try and make Princess Jasiminka smile?"
The king was surprised.  "What can you, a mere boy, do when the others have failed?" he asked."I think I know what will make the Princess happy," he said and produced from his pocket, a small black kitten.  "Please, let me try.""All right.  ALL the others have failed," the king said and led him to the room where the Princess sat."

"Did he succeed?" Jasiminka asked eagerly.

"You'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out, Little One.  Now say your prayers and go to sleep," Luka told her.

"Yes, Dr. Luka," she said, giving him a hug and kissing his cheek.

"Goodnight, Little One," Luka said, tucking her in.  "Now, I need to read your brother a story."

"Goodnight, Dr. Luka." she said and snuggled under the blanket.

Luka quietly turned off the light and left the room.  Entering the boy's room, he asked, "What story do you want me to read?"

"'Meowth To The Rescue'," Nikola said, handing over his favorite book.  Luka sat down to read it for the third time.

After putting Little Luka to bed in the nursery, Roza quietly knocked on Zelika's door and asked, "May I come in?"

"Yes, Mom," she said and opened the door.  "I apologized to Luka."

"I know you did.  I just want you to understand what we talked about earlier.  Luka and I enjoy kissing and holding and touching each other.  I'M glad to see him looking happy again.  After his wife and children died, he was SO sad and depressed."

"I'm glad Luka makes you happy.  And I promise not to say anything more."

"Good girl.  Now go to sleep."  She headed for her bedroom to find Luka already undressed and in bed.

"You have a talk with Zelika?" he asked.

"Yes, I did.  She promised not to say anything more," Roza said as she began undressing in the bathroom.

"I guess I've still got to get used to the children seeing us kissing," Luka commented.

"Twins asleep?"

"Yeah.  I told more of the story to Jasiminka and reread Nikki's favorite book.  If I KEEP reading it by the time the week is up, I'll have it memorized," Luka replied.

Roza slipped in bed beside him and rested her head on his shoulder.  "I love you, my Luka."

"I love you, Roza.  Goodnight."  He leaned over to kiss her and then switched off the lamp.
